Working back and forth with sanding equipment is the correct technique because it allows for even material removal and helps to maintain a flat surface. This motion provides better control, which minimizes the risk of creating uneven surfaces or gouges in the material. By sanding in a linear motion, the operator can also more easily monitor their progress and adjust pressure accordingly to reach the desired smoothness.

Using circular motions can lead to uneven surfaces and may create divots or swirl marks, which usually require additional sanding to correct. Sanding in vertical lines only restricts the technique and doesn't promote an even finish across the area being worked on. Similarly, diagonal patterns may not effectively remove material uniformly, resulting in an uneven surface as well. Therefore, the back and forth technique is preferred for achieving a smooth, even finish when sanding.
